01 // Background

Built for complex missions.

Andre Douglas began his career in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving as a naval architect, salvage engineer, damage-control assistant and deck officer. His operational work included search and rescue, humanitarian response, maritime safety and vessel-recovery missions.

He later joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where he worked on autonomous systems, planetary defence and space exploration. His projects included support for NASA’s DART asteroid-deflection mission and instrumentation for Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration spacecraft.

NASA selected Douglas in 2021. After completing astronaut training, he served as the Artemis II backup and trained with the flight crew, then supported crew closeout at the launch pad. Artemis III will be his first journey to space.
