Artemis III hardware update: SLS engines, Orion checks and crew training
NASA’s August report records progress across the rocket, spacecraft and crew. This briefing describes that dated status, not a live engineering feed.
What NASA confirmed
- SLS: RS-25 installation began on 24 August inside Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building. Further engine, propulsion and electrical work remained ahead.
- Boosters: segment stacking was more than halfway complete.
- Orion: the joined crew and service modules underwent their first combined power-on, checking electrical connectivity and subsystem communications.
- Crew: integrated simulations with all four astronauts and flight controllers had begun, alongside spacecraft and operational training.

What this does—and does not—mean
These are preparation milestones, not confirmation that the complete launch system is ready. NASA’s mission overview lists a 2027 target for the Earth-orbit demonstration. A target year should not be presented as a fixed launch date.
