Real-Time Distance Tracking
Once Artemis II launches, the countdown seamlessly transforms into the Artemis Distance Counter (ADC) - our most technically sophisticated feature. The ADC provides live tracking of Orion's distance from Earth's surface with sub-kilometer precision, updating 10 times per second for smooth, real-time visualization.
Watch as Artemis II attempts to break Apollo 13's 56-year-old human spaceflight distance record of 400,171 km (248,655 mi), set in April 1970. The ADC displays:
- 🟢 Artemis II Record - The mission's maximum distance achieved
- Apollo 13 Record - Historical benchmark for comparison
- Current Distance - Real-time position with dynamic decimal precision
The ADC features intelligent unit switching between kilometers (1 decimal place) and miles (2 decimal places). On desktop, the widget is fully draggable across the entire screen - position it wherever you prefer, and your choice is automatically saved. The counter maintains a compact, mission control aesthetic while delivering critical telemetry data as it happens.
Technology
Artemis Tracker is built with modern web technologies to deliver a smooth, immersive experience:
- Three.js (WebGL) - 3D graphics and real-time rendering
- WordPress - Content management and custom templates
- Vanilla JavaScript - Interactive timeline and camera controls
- CSS3 - Mission control aesthetic with blur effects and animations
- Responsive Design - Optimized for all screen sizes
Mission Data
All mission information is sourced from official NASA documentation, including:
- Launch date and time (April 1, 2026 at 5:24 PM ET / 22:24 UTC (No Earlier Than))
- Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39B coordinates
- Orbital trajectory and waypoint data
- Crew assignments and biographies
- Spacecraft technical specifications
The tracker updates regularly as NASA releases new mission details and timing adjustments.
Why This Project?
Artemis II represents humanity's first journey beyond low Earth orbit in over 50 years. This historic mission deserves a tracking experience that matches its significance.
Artemis Tracker was created to make this momentous event accessible and engaging for everyone, from students learning about space exploration to lifelong space fans who remember Apollo.
